Keeping yourself safe during summer听
Here are some tips to stay safe during the summer:听
- If you鈥檙e out, make sure your phone is charged and your location services on so you can be located in an emergency.听
- Always use a trusted taxi company instead of hailing one and ensure the details match the one you get into.听
- Report crime anonymously on 101 or www.fearless.org. If you find yourself in immediate danger, call 999.听
Staying healthy听
Here are some tips to stay healthy during the summer:听
- You don鈥檛 need to be 鈥榮tuck鈥 in the house 鈥 take walks, get some exercise but also find the time to rest and try some mindfulness activities.听听
- Spend time with friends and family
- Make sure you’re eating nutritious meals
Thinking about using alcohol or drugs?听
Most young people do not use substances and it is important you know the law and risks of using drugs and alcohol. However, if you do choose to use or then here are some tips on how to keep safe:听
- Pace yourself and go slow. Alternate alcohol with soft drinks or water and stick to lower alcohol percentage drinks.听
- Taking illegal drugs is always risky. Tolerance levels can be different, and with illegal drugs, you never know what鈥檚 in them, their strength or purity.听
- Do not leave drinks unattended or accept a drink from someone you don鈥檛 know. It may have been .听
- Avoid mixing drugs and alcohol together and do not mix these with prescription medicines.听
- Never drive whilst under the influence or get into a car where the driver has used drugs or excessive alcohol.听
- Keep . Make sure you have someone you can trust and rely on, if you or a friend needs help.听

If you鈥檙e out and someone makes you uncomfortable, Ask for 鈥淎ngela鈥. Bar and restaurant staff will know that you need help getting out of the situation and will call you a taxi or help you leave discreetly 鈥 without fuss.听
Deciding whether to have sex?听
- Make sure you 鈥 use a condom to protect against sexually transmitted infections or unwanted pregnancy.听
- It鈥檚 important that any sexual activity you have is consensual, meaning both agree, feel happy and comfortable with it.听
- . Remember, you have the right to change your mind and say 鈥渘o鈥 or 鈥渟top鈥 at any point.听
- If the sex you had wasn鈥檛 consensual, seek help from the Police or 听
Feeling low or lonely?听
The summer break from college can feel exciting for most young people, but for some, they may feel worried about a long summer at home or away from their friends and support networks.听听听听听
Top tips that may help:听
- Keep up a good routine 鈥 try to get up at a reasonable time each day, shower and get dressed.听
- Get planning 鈥 plan your days or weeks to have something to look forward to or focus on.听
- Practice self-care 鈥 go for walks outside, explore a new area, learn a new hobby, or volunteer.听
- Stay connected with friends and suggest meeting up during the holidays. They may be feeling the same as you.听
- If you feel low and are having negative feelings, remember it will pass 鈥 but there鈥檚 always someone to talk to. Call the Samaritans on 116 123.听
Wanting to stay connected with others online?听
If you鈥檙e communicating with others online:听
- Review your privacy settings and try not to advertise when you鈥檙e away on holiday or home alone on social media.听听
- Report any harmful, abusive, or illegal content.听
- Report, block, and screenshot any inappropriate or offensive behaviour.听
- Only use trusted and reputable sources of information and only communicate with people you know.听
- Do not share your bank details or personal information to anybody without verifying their identity first 鈥 if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!听听听听听
Wanting to cool off by swimming?听
If you鈥檙e swimming this summer:听听
- Ask yourself, is the area safe? Is it too deep, too shallow, are there currents, or underwater objects?听
- Enter slowly and carefully 鈥 never jump from heights.听
- Don鈥檛 go too far 鈥 stay within reach and within a standing depth.听
- Make sure someone is around to call for help if needed and keep a look out for lifeguards. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for Fire Service when inland and Coastguard if at the coast.听
- Do not go swimming whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol.听
- If you do get into trouble, stay calm, float on your back and call for help.听听
