In previous years, finding a personal trainer on campus usually involved begging an exercise science major to take you on as part of their senior project. The process has become much easier now that the Reiner Wellness Center has introduced a new service for its campus and community patrons: student personal trainers.
Anders Swanson-Lane, an exercise science major from Minnesota, and Gregory Gaines, a pre-nursing student from California, now offer one-on-one sessions and small-group fitness classes. Both trainers have earned certifications from nationally recognized organizations and have a passion for not only their own fitness, but the health and well-being of others.
“It’s super rewarding to educate people on how to work out more effectively — what works, what doesn’t — and bring the energy that helps push them to work harder than they would alone,” Gaines said. “When my clients need some motivation, I focus on solving their core challenges — whether it’s feeling insecure about working out, finding the time, or working around an injury. I show them that fitness is easier and more fun than they might think.”
Swanson-Lane likes to say it’s all about consistency. “Just try to get one percent better every day,” he said. “That will take you farther than trying to do everything all at once. If you’re trying to get into some exercise, come work with me. Even if you don’t want to go all the way to hiring a personal trainer, if you see me in the gym, come talk to me, and ask me questions. I’m always happy to talk. My best advice for people is just start easy; make it as easy as you can, but just start.”
Tim Simon, Union’s executive director for institutional effectiveness and a 1979 graduate, has already been training with Swanson-Lane for a semester. “He is just so kind and helpful, and he really knows his stuff,” Simon said. “It makes a real difference having someone to teach and motivate you.”
